Pediatric tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgeries in otolaryngology, mainly targeting recurrent tonsillitis or respiratory and swallowing disorders caused by tonsillar hypertrophy.
Children's tonsils have important immune functions, but excessive hypertrophy or recurrent infections can become focal infections, affecting growth, development and quality of life.
Surgical Indications
1. Recurrent tonsillitis, more than 5-7 episodes per year, or more than 3 episodes per year for 2-3 consecutive years.
2. Tonsillar hypertrophy causing sleep apnea, severe snoring or dysphagia.
3. Tonsillitis causing systemic complications such as rheumatic fever, nephritis, myocarditis.
Surgical Options
Current mainstream surgical methods include traditional dissection, low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation and ultrasonic scalpel resection. Low-temperature plasma technology has the advantages of less bleeding, less pain and faster recovery, especially suitable for pediatric patients.
Postoperative Recovery
Children usually recover faster than adults after surgery, and can resume normal diet in 7-10 days. Postoperative attention should be paid to observe bleeding, eat warm and cool liquid food, and avoid strenuous activities.
